I recently bought my husband a Raspberry Pi so he could play retro games again without digging out our old systems. However, I never knew there were other things it could be used for. I'm going to discuss the other amazing things you can do with a Raspberry Pi if you are not a gamer or didn't care for the old retro games.
You can use the Pi to control a DSLR Camera, set up a quiz game, or even play your Steam games from it. With the Pi you can set up a pressure pad that detects pressure on a specific area or even test your internet speed. There is a way to have the Pi set up a network wide ad blocker and screen sharing. I'll be posting the link at the end that explains all of these features and how to do them on your own.
I'm amazed at how inexpensive it was and all the things you can do with it. So far we haven't had any problems except with the PS4 controller and old PS1 games. Back in the early days of Playstation, there was a button that allowed the user to turn off or on the analog sticks. Many games required you to turn off the analog sticks so you could play the game. With the modern day controllers there is no such button, the analog sticks are always on. I read from other users that the corded controllers that came with the Pi or the old PS1 controllers would work the best. I have not tried it out yet to see if it changes anything. I will post my update here when I find out if this is a solution to that problem.
Another point for anyone who has not used one or isn't sure of buying one, if you want to use it for games, you'll need to use a flash drive to hold your games and saves. Some games that are classic didn't have save files, meaning you'll have to make your own save games on the system itself instead of the game. Whereas the PS1 games had save states which makes it much easier to pick up where you last left off, unlike the old Nintendo games. Just something to consider when purchasing one. If anyone has any questions about the Pi there are numerous Youtube videos and websites to help you set it up, download your games, and how to set your Pi up for other tasks that might be beneficial to you.
