I heard the stories as a child, they were on cassette. A teacher brought them in around Halloween while I was in Middle School. I was intrigued and I borrowed them at the end of the day. I now have the books after all these years. I will say if anyone wants to read the original creepy stories with the included horrifying images, go for the oldest published versions. The books were altered to appease younger audiences after they learned that the original artwork was too terrifying. I'll post a link at the end of this article for you all to see for yourself.
I heard rumors a few years ago that those three books were going to be made into a movie or trilogy. Now it seems those rumors have been confirmed. There is indeed a movie being made and it looks true to the stories in the books. Only a few of the creatures have been identified from the trailer so far. Those are the Big Toe, the Pale Lady, Jingly Man, and Red Spot.
"The series is particularly beloved for its unforgettable artwork, done by the Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator Stephen Gammell. Ranging from garish to gross, from gothic to ghostly, the images in Scary Stories and its sequels have instilled nightmares in generations of kids, ever since the first of the three volumes debuted in 1981. In fact, during the ’90s, undoubtedly because of its dark, frequently gory subject matter, Scary Stories was the most-challenged banned book of the decade, and it’s still in the top 10" (Romano, 2019). In 2012 the publisher chose to have the images changed, they hired a new artist by the name of Brett Helquist. In 2015 the publisher scrapped the changes and republished the books with the original artistry.
Del Toro will be directing the film and the trailer looks impressive. I cannot wait to see this in theaters. I will be posting my review here in case anyone has the urge to go see it or is unsure if it's any good.
